Ayrton & Saunders Poison Bottles

So far I have managed to collect two 2oz Ayrton and Saunders Poisons:

The Ayrton & Saunders poison bottles are quite rare but not hugely priced.  They are a Liverpool poison bottle and are branded 'IXL' which was their trade mark.  They are a round poison with 'NOT TO BE TAKEN' embossed on the front in between vertical ribs and the word 'POISON' written on the otherwise plain back.  The normal versions have 'SAUNDERS/LIVERPOOL' embossed on the bottom around the capacity size.  The alternative version is just the 'IXL' trade mark on the bottom or sometimes 'IXL/LIVERPOOL'.  Most commonly they are found in green and are very rare in Cobalt blue.

It is not obvious that these bottles were actually patented although the 'IXL' brand was used from as early as 1889.

The wording on the top bottle above is as follows:

Version:  Cobalt blue, cork

Front:  NOT TO BE TAKEN

Back:  POISON

Bottom:  IXL

The wording on the bottom bottle above is as follows:

Version:  Green, cork

Front:  NOT TO BE TAKEN

Back:  POISON

Bottom:  IXL/LIVERPOOL/2
